Highland League 1893-94

The Highland League was formed in 1893 and the founder members were the five Inverness clubs, Thistle, Caledonian, Clachnacuddin, Union and Citadel along with Forres Mechanics, Dingwall (later that season to become Ross County) and the army side Cameron Highlanders. The first ever Highland League fixtures were played in September 1893 and in November Ross County had resigned leaving the first championship with only seven teams. Inverness Thistle went on to win the first league championship losing only one game along the way scoring 59 goals (nearly 5 per game) and conceding only 16. In the same season the Thistle team also won the North of Scotland FA cup.

As a footnote when Inverness Thistle played their last Highland League match in 1994 five of the original members (Thistle, Caley, Clach, Forres and Ross County) were still playing in the league. Today there are only two teams remaining Clach and Forres.
